Growth Factor Bio-Technology

Growth factor technology using the patient’s own platelets and plasma has been evolving in surgical medicine and dentistry for over twenty years.  The surgical goals are to reduce swelling, accelerate soft tissue growth and healing and to promote more and better quality bone formation where needed.

The two newest  protocols are called PRGF (Plasma Rich Growth Factor) and PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin). These techniques have been studied for about ten years without harmful effects to the patient.

The procedure starts by obtaining several tubes of blood from the patient. The blood is placed in a centrifuge and specific components are removed and concentrated. These include the platelets and the plasma.  The platelet concentrate contains more than ten of the patient’s own growth factors and the plasma contains fibrin which is the foundation for all initial healing in the body. Both of these components are used during the implant or periodontal surgery to grow more and better quality bone and to accelerate soft tissue healing.
