If you admire the smiles of celebrities like Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta-Jones, you aren’t alone. But you may be surprised to find out that their smiles are actually the product of their cosmetic dentist. Both of these big-time movie stars (and many others) wear dental veneers that conceal dental imperfections.
At our Baltimore, MD dentist office, we offer dental veneers to give you the same results as top movie stars. Dental veneers are a cosmetic dentistry intervention that involves applying a tooth-colored “shell” to the outside of the teeth to make them appear brighter, less damaged and more even.
Veneers are custom-made to suit your goals for your smile and how white you would like your teeth to appear. You may be a good candidate for veneers if your front upper teeth are crooked, slightly gapped, misshapen, stained or broken.
Many of Dr. Murphy’s Baltimore dentist patients opt for dental veneers because they require minimal changes to your existing teeth, yet offer significant benefits to the wearer. Getting veneers typically takes about three office visits.
The first office visit involves discussing veneers and their application. Dr. Murphy may also “prepare” the teeth for veneers by removing a small portion of the dental enamel. This helps the veneers to sit naturally against the teeth and helps them better adhere to the teeth. Dr. Murphy will take a mold of your teeth, which is sent to a dental laboratory to create your personal veneers.
Before application, veneers look like small, tooth-colored shells. Think of them as a more permanent version of artificial or “press-on” nails. However, unlike false fingernails, dental veneers can last anywhere from 5 to upwards of 20 years. Dr. Murphy bonds them to the teeth using a special cement that ensures the veneers look natural and well-fitting.
While veneers can chip, they do not stain. You can avoid chipping by avoiding using your teeth as “openers” for opening packages or “tearers” in biting your fingernails. You should not have to make any food choice changes beyond avoiding what is already bad for your teeth (such as chewing ice).
In a very short time, veneers can give you the smile you wish you were born with. For more information on dental veneers at the office of Dr. K. Michael Murphy and Associates, please call our Baltimore dentist’s office at (410) 235-1233.
